Firefighters were battling an outside fire at a recycling plant in southeast Calgary on Tuesday evening.
Batt. Chief Bruce Barrs said the call came in about a fire at ECCO Recycling & Energy Corp. near the intersection of Quarry Park Boulevard and 24th Street S.E. at around 8:40 p.m.
He said 13 firefighters, two fire trucks and two water tankers were fighting the blaze as of 10:40 p.m.— the water tankers were needed because there are no hydrants near the fire.
"The fire is contained," Barrs said.
"It's under control at this time, but as a lot of times with landfills or with fires like this they tend to be deep seated and it takes a while to actually get to the seat of the fire."
Barrs said two pieces of heavy equipment from the plant were assisting, by picking apart the piles of recyclable material as crews worked to extinguish hot spots.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
